Everything you might want to know first
If your question isn't answered here, feel free to check your target bank's own switch terms for the specifics of their condition.
What is Cheap Direct Debit?
A service that sets up two genuine, low-cost £1 direct debit mandates on your account, so you meet the "two active direct debits" condition that many UK banks attach to their switch offers.
Why do I need two direct debits to switch banks?
Switching itself is handled by the Current Account Switch Service (CASS), which moves your balance, payments and direct debits automatically. Most cash switch bonuses add their own extra conditions on top of the switch, and "at least two active direct debits" is the most common one, alongside a minimum pay-in.
Is this safe and legitimate?
Yes. These are genuine Bacs direct debit mandates, not a workaround or a loophole in the payment system. They're processed by GoCardless, an FCA-authorised payment institution used by thousands of UK businesses, and every collection is covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee.
Will this affect my credit score?
No. Setting up a direct debit doesn't involve a credit check and isn't recorded on your credit file. A credit check may happen when you apply for the new bank account itself, but that's separate from these direct debits.
Do standing orders count instead of direct debits?
Usually not. Most banks' switch terms are specific about wanting a direct debit, which is a different payment type from a standing order — a direct debit lets the recipient vary or collect the amount, while a standing order is fixed and controlled entirely by you. Check your target bank's exact wording if you're unsure.
When does a direct debit count as "active"?
A mandate being set up isn't always enough on its own — most banks look for at least one payment to have actually been collected before they treat a direct debit as active. It's worth waiting for the first £1 collection before you start your switch.
What happens to these direct debits after I switch?
CASS automatically carries all your existing direct debits, including these, across to your new account as part of the switch. Once your switch is complete, you can either leave them running or cancel them.
Can I cancel at any time?
Yes. There's no minimum term or contract attached to either option. You can cancel through your bank or directly with GoCardless whenever you like.
How much does this cost in total?
Each direct debit collects £1 per period, so running both costs £2 in total until you cancel one or both.
What if a payment is taken in error?
Every direct debit is protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee. If an incorrect amount is ever collected, you're entitled to an immediate refund from your own bank.
Will I need both options, or just one?
Most switch offers ask for at least two active direct debits, so setting up both the Fixed and Alternate options together is the safest way to meet that condition.
